Ingrown hair happens when... the hair does not grow the way it's suppose to - along its normal course through the hair folicle opening and then out and above the skin's surface. Instead, it grows back into the skin and form what we all know as ingrown hair.
Ingrowns can pop up up anywhere that you shave but are more common in curly hair or area where hair is curly and coarse. They are very common in the pubic area, bikini line, armpits, and chin area. It's not uncommon to experience ingrown in the back of your thighs/full legs.
When the hair curls back into the skin, the body tends to respond by triggering an inflammatory reaction that produces symptoms like: pain, itching, redness, and/or inflamation/sweelling.
Often, a lot of people will notice that the inflammation leave being PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyper-pigmentation (dark spots). If you're not careful, you might start to experience more significant scarring with each flare-up.

Fortunately, the post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation/uneven skin tone left from an ingrown hair they can resolve without any professional treatment. Unfortunately, it can take several months to a year to do so.
How to treat and prevent ingrown hair scars
Now, let's talk how to get rid of the dark marks left behind by ingrown hairs. Use products that accelerate cell turnover to help disperse pigment from the skin's surface. Vitamin A, mandelic acid, lactic acid, and glycolic acid are good choices. Pair these with brightening ingredients like vitamin C, kojic acid, or hydroquinone.
You want to ensure you create a simple and easy to follow regimen that will help you prevent the ingrown hair in the first place.
It's not hard to prevent and/or treat the ingrown hair scars in the chin area. The main things you want to keep in mind is this:
- Keep you skin clean and moisturized daily
- Once per week, treat yourself to a mini spa day at home - Focus on exfoliating the concerned areas
- Cleanse
- Exfoliate
- Tone

Cut an aloe vera leaf directly off the plant and use the gel inside it on the scar. Massage the gel in for several minutes daily until the scar has faded. Aloe vera can also be purchased as a ready-made gel.

Retinol: This can unclog pores and fade dark spots. You'll find benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinol in acne products that you can buy without a prescription. Retinol is a type of retinoid. Another retinoid that may be helpful is adapalene gel 0.1%.
